The Lady, 2016, Archival inkjet print from 4x5 negative, 50x70in

Gender division in the office is the subject of my large-format photograph The Lady, which depicts a calculator with a highly simplified design that offers only a limited number of keys on its keypad apparently geared towards female office staff who are assumed to be less mathematically capable than their male counterparts. The image is blown up to a monumental scale in order to expose and emphasise the constructedness of this culturally sanctioned form of essentialism, which attributes a certain technological savviness or lack thereof to a particular gender. The exaggerated scale and resulting theatricality of the image undermines this proposition and any claims to its validity and renders it entirely absurd.
